A volatile stock market, unpredictably disastrous weather, home mortgage crises and tightening credit crunch all add up to increasingly difficult home environments. Some of the most at-risk members of our population include pregnant and postpartum mothers. They are already coping with tremendous hormone and brain chemistry changes, and have a biological imperative to establish a safe haven for their new charges.

It’s only been in recent years that society has accepted the fact that a substantial number of new mothers become depressed in the weeks and months after the arrival of their babies. Growing evidence is mounting that new fathers also experience nearly the same type of postpartum depression as their partners. They, too, can feel a sense of stress and depression when transitioning into their new parental responsibilities.

Before carting in the first box or chair, take a walk through your new home with paper and pencil and a camera, to create a diary of its condition on the day you took occupancy. If anything is not the way you expected it to be, you’ll need to make this known right away.

You’ve probably seen pictures of Buddhist monks sitting on the floor while meditating. However, for many of us that just isn’t an option.
