  1. Innovative Lean Development applies many of the best lean concepts as applied to product development and provides some excellent example methods that any product development organization can apapt or apply. If you have read books like Allen C. Ward’s – Lean Product and Process Development – Lean Product and Process Development or Donald G. Reinartsen’s – The Principles of Product Development Flow – The Principles of Product Development Flow: Second Generation Lean Product Development, Schipper and Swets takes the next step and provides excellent examples of applying lean principles to product development. We are looking at how to use smaller batches, fast iterative learning cycles, better planning, controlled release of work and better knowledge management in our organization.

  2. The material presented in this book is thoughtfully reasoned, concise, and a practical guide for anyone who seeks to radically improve their business operations and innovation process. I highly recommend the book for every product development leader/team as well as any COO/VP-Operations who may be curious about those aspects of agile software development -and/or- lean manufacturing that might have applicability to business processes and organizational learning. The authors have strongly convinced me that they do! In just 174 pages, Schipper & Swets present a stepped guide and rationale to agile/lean development based on cyclic learning. The two have obviously found their own practitioner learnings at the intersection of both agile and lean practices and have surfaced/devised an entire system which can be/should be applied to both innovation and operations development. I realize since I was looking for an approach like this, my response is a bit. . . enthusiastic, but I am absolutely convinced that the methods to dramatically improve product/process innovation and operational business practices presented in this book are important and should be read/understood by more people. For me, the material covered in this book, definitely deserves a five star rating!
