Effective Study Motivation Tips

by Ethan Beh

Experiencing problems with motivating yourself to study? Have a big test next week but still not picking up your books yet? Does thinking about studying make you feel turned off?

If you feel this way, well at least you can take comfort in the fact that almost everyone has experienced this lack of study motivation. This is especially true a person has no interests at all in the subject that he or she is studying.

The good news is as long as you have determination, a little will power and know some tips and strategies for increasing study motivation, you can easily put yourself into ‘study-mode’. Use the tips below to help increase your study motivation.

1. Set a schedule and study at the right time. Set a study schedule everyday. It’s good to plan your day in advance. Set a specific time for studying, and a time for playing or relaxing. This way, you won’t worry about ‘missing’ your fun. You may be studying hard now, but you know that later on you’ll be enjoying yourself. So this keeps you focused on studying in the present.

2. Get started with the 5 minute principle. The most difficult part in studying is getting started. The beginning is the toughest challenge. However, once you have got some momentum, things start to get easier and easier.

Everytime you don’t feel like studying, just plan to study seriously for 5 minutes. Tell yourself and genuinely only intend to study for the next 5 minutes, then that’s it. This will more likely to get you to take action as it will feel much less painful compared to bracing yourself to study for the next 2 hours.

Usually, what happens is after the 5 minutes are up, you would have been well into the swing of things that you’ll want to continue to study longer. The key here is to make sure that for those 5 minutes you are really studying 100%.

3. Stop/start at the fun part. When having to stop for breaks, meals or other activities, plan to stop when you’re at a fun part of the subject. The parts that are more interesting and enjoyable to you. This way, when you continue to study later, it’ll be much easier to get started because you’ll be starting at the fun parts.

4. Remove distractions from your surroundings. When you got the TV, phone, computer, bed, magazines etc nearby, you’ll be easily tempted to throw your books aside. Try to remove as many distractions away from you as possible. When the remote is right next to you, you’re more likely to pick it up. Same with your phone, laptop etc. But if you have to walk all the way across to another part of the house to watch TV chances are you’ll be less likely to do it.

5. Set study goals. People will naturally be more motivated whenever there is a target to aim at. If you set study goals, you will be determined rise up to the challenge and push yourself to reach those goals. The satisfaction that you get from meeting those study goals will drive you to want to study even more and set even higher goals.
